Cool Roofs: Basking In Reflected Glory

The Mother Nature Network posted an article about the US DOE encouraging us to use reflective or light colored paint for roofs. There are different suggestions for residential and commercial buildings, and different types of reflective paints and coatings, including one that is only reflective in the infrared spectrum. That means it can reflect heat without blinding you when you look at it. Follow the link below.

Powering a Green Planet

Scientific American has a great web-only article about gettting clean energy usage to 100% in 20 years. While the article is extremely optimistic in some respects, it does offer many fantastic ideas that are useful and can set us in right direction. It is also interactive, have fun while you read it!

 GREEN TIPS

Important News for Asphalt Driveway Owners

If you have a blacktop driveway at your home or business, you should know that most asphalt sealers sold in the Chicago area market contain coal tar, which is a known carcinogen. And every time you walk across your driveway or parking lot your shoes carry this nasty stuff into your home or facility. That’s not good for you, your family or your employees!

Left untreated, asphalt pavement deteriorates rapidly. The asphalt binder that holds the pavement together begins to oxidize and weather, soon after installation. Moisture penetrates the asphalt causing further damage and deterioration to the pavement. Eco-sealer uses only Safe Seal®, a non-coal tar sealer emulsion designed to replenish the binder that is lost through weathering and aging. This provides superior protection against environmental distress.

As a local Chicago construction business, Eco-Sealer started exploring alternative sealers after a USGS report, published earlier this year, showed a Chicago suburb with some of the nations highest levels of PAH’s.

Grow Greens All Year Round

You can grow delicious greens all year round by using a hoophouse, also referred to as a "high tunnel." This is a relatively simple structure, similar to a greenhouse, but unheated and it is considered temporary. Greens will survive the winter even in harsh climates such as Chicago. There are many urban farmers in Chicago who are looking at methods for getting more out of small city lots. One way to do this is by extending the season into late December, and beginning again in late February or early March. No longer is the farming season simply from June - September.

Urban farmers in Chicago have joined together to form Advocates for Urban Agriculture. This network of over 270 individuals, organizations, and businesses brings urban farmers together to advocate for change and to educate one another.

The interest in urban farming in Chicago keeps growing every year. Growing Home operates two certified organic urban farms on the south side of Chicago.
